2015 Photo Contest: 1st Place, Natural Untouched Micrographs or Photographs, "Microporous “Broccoli-like” Aluminosilicate Crystals", by Rui Li and Jeffrey D. Rimer, University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA, Uniform microporous aluminosilicate (zeolite) crystals with an exquisite “broccoli-like” morphology that were grown from amorphous precursors under hydrothermal synthesis conditions. This serves as evidence of nonclassical crystallization. The crystal has a MER zeolite framework type (tetragonal, a=14.012Å, b=14.012Å, c=9.954Å, I4/mmm).

Second Place, “The Flowers that Be”, Elias Nakouzi, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, USA, Surprisingly, simple crystallization reactions can assemble "biomorphs" with life-like shapes. The flowers and leaves shown here are purely inorganic structures formed by the co-precipitation of silica and barium carbonate. However, it is not just about the aesthetics; these crystal aggregates are giving profound insights into biomimetic crystallization pathways. false coloring added to image.
First Place, Images Including Digital Manipulation or Computational Simulations, “Alien from Planet “SiC”, Jianqiu Guo, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, USA, On Planet “SiC”, which is thousands of light years away from the Earth, there lives a mysterious creature. He has two huge eyes just like two threading screw dislocations in 4H-SiC!  (The two eyes of the alien are actually simulated X-ray topographic contrast from a pair of opposite-sign threading screw dislocations in 4H-SiC crystals grown by PVT method. The simulation was made with the sample-film distance set at 18cm and the separation between the dislocations cores set at 22um. The simulated image was then cropped to resemble an alien face.)
Honorable Mention, “p-doped GaInP Nanowires grown by MOCVD from a Pattern defined by Nanoimprint Lithography”, Alexander Berg, Lund University, Lund, Sweden, Nanowire arrays are used to fabricate optoelectronic devices. Radial core-shell pn-junction GaInP nanowires can be used for red/orange/yellow light-emitting diodes.
First Place, “Barium titanate Bhutanese blue poppies”, Amy C. Allen, Caleah N. Whitten, Todd C. Monson, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM, USA, Barium titanate platelets were synthesized through the thermal decomposition of barium titanyl oxalate.  The platelets self-assembled into flower like structures and were imaged using a scanning electron microscope.  The image was digitally manipulated to give the “flowers” the appearance of Bhutanese blue poppies (as featured in the movie Batman Begins).
